DC Plan Retirement: The Shift from Accumulation to DecumulationJune 18, 2014 7:30 AM to 9:00 AMRoyal Mayfair Golf and Country Club, Edmonton, Alberta Area of Interest: Pensions, Investments, Networking Format: In PersonDuring working years, employers spend time, money and effort to make sure that plan members participate in a competitive, well run retirement plan, with appropriate investments and low fees. However, in many cases, neither employers nor employees know if the accumulation of assets will lead to a pension that’s good enough to retire on. And, just when employees need the most help in putting their retirement puzzle together, many employers step aside. This discussion will highlight how some of the new investment products and services will get plan members through retirement, not just to retirement; what some employers are doing to help employees get ready; comparing the current offerings from plan record keepers and what we might see from regulators going forward. Burk has 30 years’ experience in the pension and investment industry. He has been involved in almost every aspect of retirement and savings plan design, investment and manager selection, monitoring and governance. He has worked with some of Canada’s largest retirement plans, providing guidance and advice to companies, unions, boards of trustees and pension investment committees. As a member of Aon Hewitt’s Investment Consulting practice, Burk is also the DC Practice lead for Western Canada and provides clients with investment selection and monitoring services, as well as guidance on plan design, governance best practices, charter documents and other policy statements. For a number of years, Burk has been working with his clients on plan member purchase of retirement products, education in the pre-retirement corridor, and developing best practices in this area. He has a degree from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia and is a Past Chair of the Canadian Pension and Benefits Institute’s National Board.
