The continuing education session will be held over two lunch time sessions instead of during a single half day session. Sessions will be offered as a 2-part package over the lunch hour and will include lunch.

Session description : Defined Benefits 101  

This session will provide an overview of defined benefit pension plans, including typical plan designs, governing regulations, actuarial valuations and funding requirements, as well as common risks pension plans face. By attending this session, participants will gain a basic understanding of the defined benefit promise made by an employer, the key components and terminology used in plan documents, the regulatory environment of pension plans and the different types of actuarial valuations required.    

This session will provide particularly useful information for those interested in gaining general knowledge of defined benefit pension plans.

Kevin Smiley, FCIA, FSA
Consultant
Aon Hewitt

Kevin is a Consultant and Actuary in Aon Hewitt’s Retirement and Investment Practice in Vancouver. He has close to 10 years of experience with Aon Hewitt supporting account executives with strategic thinking while managing and reviewing technical and administrative projects for his clients. Kevin’s primary work includes conducting actuarial valuations of pension plans, supporting clients with day-to-day pension issues and ensuring their plans are compliant with pension regulations. Kevin graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Commerce degree after which he studied Actuarial Science at Simon Fraser University. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries.


Vivian Lee, ACIA, ASA
Consultant
Aon Hewitt

Vivian joined Aon Hewitt’s Retirement and Investment Practice in 2012 and was based in Montreal. She relocated to Vancouver in 2014. As a Consultant, Vivian supports the account executive on all key deliverables including the production and review of actuarial valuations, accounting valuations and special projects. Vivian is also part of Aon Hewitt’s Longevity Team, which involves performing mortality studies to analyze a pension plan’s mortality experience. Vivian has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Actuarial Mathematics from Concordia University. She is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries and Associate of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.

PART 2 - May 4th.
