Canada’s anti-spam legislation will come into force on July 1, 2014. This presentation will provide useful background on this initiative, and explore how the new rules will affect general email practices of organizations, often in surprising and unexpected ways. Suggestions for compliance will be reviewed, as all organizations will need to understand these rules, the transition periods and the exemptions available to them, revising email practices and procedures to conform to one of the strongest anti-spam regimes yet to be enacted.

Robert Pakrul is a member of the Corporate Commercial Practice at Alexander Holbourn Beaudin & Lang LLP. He also participates in the Health and Information and Privacy Practices.

His practice is primarily corporate commercial based with an emphasis on information and privacy, transportation law, entertainment and mergers and acquisitions. He provides advice to a wide variety of organizations in various industry sectors. Mr. Pakrul has significant experience working with both public sector and private sector organizations on privacy compliance. He works with large and small non-profit organizations and foundations in their creation, governance, regulatory compliance and day-to-day operations. He also advises on public safety law, providing advice to emergency communications corporations and other public safety bodies in British Columbia on matters such as liability and statutory immunity, the legal impact of new and emerging technologies and regulatory matters affecting 9-1-1 services. Mr. Pakrul graduated from Queen's University with a Bachelor of Commerce and received his law degree from the University of Toronto. He has been a member of the British Columbia bar since 1988.
