This presentation will dive into findings on the health impacts of workplace pensions—linking access to good retirement plans with improved mental health, reduced financial stress, and greater productivity in working years. Drawing on multiple studies, including the Canadian Retirement Survey, Canadian Pension Survey, and recent work on the gender pension gap, this session offers a comprehensive look at how retirement planning can improve both present-day wellbeing and long-term outcomes. Designed for plan sponsors, advisors, consultants, and institutional stakeholders, the session will offer practical insights into why good pensions matter—and how they benefit individuals and organizations across all sectors. | Speaker: | Darryl MabiniAssistant Vice President, Pension Advocacy and Research Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) - Toronto, Ontario |  | | Darryl Mabini has worked in the defined benefit (DB) pension industry for over 25 years. After starting his career in plan administration at the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP), he moved to the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP), where he started their employer and member recruitment program. In 2014, Darryl led HOOPP’s foundational pension advocacy strategy aimed at raising public awareness of the value of DB pension plans. Advocacy efforts included opinion columns by the pension plan’s leadership, stakeholder events, research papers and other initiatives in collaboration with other pension plans and funds.
| Today, Darryl leads HOOPP’s pension advocacy and research team, which advocates for good pensions for all Canadians through thought leadership research. His role also involves outreach to a variety of stakeholders, including members and employers, unions, pension industry experts and associations, and healthcare sector advocacy groups. Darryl holds a global executive M.B.A. degree from both the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto and the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree from McMaster University. Darryl is a member of the Advisory Council to the National Institute on Ageing at Ryerson University and an active volunteer for the Association of Canadian Pension Management and the International Federation of Employee Benefits and Pensions. |
