This session will address a range of funding related topics, including the linkage between funding and investment policies, the importance of asset liability management (ALM) studies, experience studies, a Statement of Investment Policies & Guidelines (SIP&G), risk frameworks, funding reviews and other strategies to support the long-term sustainability of pension plans and the mitigation of risk.

Julianna Spiropoulos is an Associate Partner in Aon Hewitt’s Calgary office and the Investment Consulting Market Lead for Alberta. Julianna provides investment advice to private and public sector pension plans, foundations and endowments and is also responsible for coordinating and delivering risk management projects for clients based in western Canada. She joined Aon Hewitt in 2011, bringing over 17 years of pension investment and corporate treasury experience with a major integrated oil and gas company. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science, an MBA and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

Ryan Welsh is an Associate Partner with Aon Hewitt’s retirement business in Winnipeg and leads the actuarial and pension administration services for offices in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Ryan provides pension and actuarial consulting services to both private and public sector clients and specializes in the valuation of liabilities for defined benefit pension plans and non-pension post-retirement benefits. Prior to joining Aon Hewitt, Ryan was the retirement business leader for a major human resource consulting firm in Winnipeg and, most recently, Vancouver. He graduated with distinction from the University of Manitoba in 2000 with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) degree and major in actuarial mathematics, has 16 years of consulting experience and is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries.
