Fall 2016 Pension & Benefits Update

New Anti-obesity drugs and Medical Marijuana (9:00 am – 10:00 am)

The effectiveness and potential pitfalls of new anti-obesity drugs will be discussed.  Also, a discussion on what’s trending on the topic of medical marijuana – including how it’s viewed as a drug, what Health Canada says about it, how it fits into traditional drug plans, and its use being promoted in the health and benefits industry.

Speaker:  Sal Cimino, Director, Pharmacy Services, Green Shield Canada 

In his role at GSC, Sal manages the department responsible for all drug claims including drug evaluations, formulary design and maintenance, pharmacy providers & drug pricing and policy. Sal has experience in both hospital and retail pharmacy and is a graduate of Western Ontario and Wayne State University of Pharmacy. Sal is past Chair of the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association, past Director of the Board of Essex County Pharmacist’s Association, a practicing licensed pharmacist and is a member in good standing with the Canadian Pharmacists’ Association.

Industry Spotlight:  The New CPP (10:15 am – 10:20 am)

An update on the first significant increase in CPP benefits since the program was launched 50 years ago.  Ryan Gibbons CPA, CA, LPA, Partner with Davis Martindale and Co-Chair of CPBI London Chapter, will give an overview of the expected changes and how it will affect both employers and employees.

Research based priorities regarding mental health and disability (10:20 am – 11:20 am)

This session will provide the findings of Morneau Shepell’s recent research on workplace mental health and disability from the viewpoint of employees, employers and physicians. Items covered include demographic trends that will increasingly impact employers’ disability rates, the specific actions that employees believe would have prevented their disability absences, and critical challenges and insights related to mental disability that can directly inform a workplace mental health strategy.

Paula will also provide recommendations regarding a model of investment and foundational approach to workplace mental health strategy, as well as ways to integrate workplace mental health into your overall people strategy.

Speaker:  Paula Allen, Morneau Shepell

Paula is currently the Vice President of Research and Integrative Solutions for Morneau Shepell. In this role, Paula focuses on the current, emerging and most complex issues that have the greatest impact on workplace health, health cost and productivity. She is also a well-recognized expert in workplace mental health, disability management and drug plan management. Paula works directly with many of Canada’s leading organizations, is co-chair of Civic Action’s Champions Council on workplace mental health, and sits on several research and strategy advisory boards that address issues ranging from e-mental health solutions to substance abuse in the workplace.

Paula completed undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Toronto in psychological research and neuropsychological testing and clinical intervention.  She has more than 20 years of experience relating to workplace research, product development and operational management that spans the range of EFAP, Attendance and Disability Management and Health and Benefits Consulting.
