Avery Shenfeld is Managing Director and Chief Economist of CIBC World Markets Inc. He has been with CIBC since 1993 and is widely recognized as one of Canada's leading economists for his perceptive analysis and insight on economic developments and their implications for financial markets. Mr. Shenfeld is a four-time winner of the Dow Jones Market Watch forecasting award and has received awards for forecast accuracy on the U.S. and Canadian economies by Bloomberg Markets. He has also been consistently ranked as one of the top Canadian economists by institutional investors. Mr. Shenfeld's prior background includes experience in management consulting. He was on the economics faculty at the University of Toronto and in the summer program at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. He has addressed numerous business groups and has been quoted in the media in the United States, Canada, Asia and Europe. We apologize for any inconvenience. CPBI Pacific Continuing Education session The Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace was released in January, 2013. This session will aim at stimulating our thinking about how we can apply the Standard to ensure psychological health safety in our workplaces. We will first provide an outline of the Standard, as well as background information. We will then focus on how the Standard can be implemented and integrated in existing disability management practices. We will use case studies to brainstorm on implementation strategies and discussion time to clarify questions about the content and feasibility of the Standard. Sleepless Nights of Drug Plan ManagementNovember 19, 2013 7:30 AM to 9:00 AMFour Seasons Hotel, 791 West Georgia Street, Vancouver, British Columbia Format: In PersonDoes your drug plan management keep you up at night? Perhaps not, however, you may have some important questions about: • Is private plan spending on new medicines sustainable?; • New research cost drivers of drugs, dental and vision care; • Measuring the value of your drug plan vs. the costs; • Impact of high cost drugs; and • The impact of expanded drug patent protection if enacted Comprehensive European Trade Agreement (CETA). This CPBI breakfast session will provide an evidence-based approach to provide answers to these questions. Brett Skinner will use available evidence to understand why BC drug costs are the lowest in the country, address the issue of sustainability of private drug plans, define the drivers that influence drug cost increases, and provide quantitative and qualitative measures of the value of investments in drug plans. This understanding will hopefully provide context to develop strategies for ensuring sustainability of BC private drug plans. Gail Attara will describe the results of a BC Healthcare system published study examining a drug reimbursement policy called Therapeutic Substitution, which required >50,000 BC patients with acid-related diseases, primarily gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), to make a medically unnecessary switch from their prescribed proton pump inhibitor (PPI) to the cheapest available PPI. This evidence provides insight to strategies and unintended consequences of Therapeutic Substitution to reduce costs of drug plans. *Student pricing is available to CPBI members who have student status.

In particular, they will offer insights into the impact of aging demographics and interest rates on life and disability costs; Health and Dental trends – forecast versus actual; Generic drug reform – where our savings come from next; Updates on provincial and federal benefit programs; and Recent legislation that impacts the cost and delivery of benefit plans. Alva Ho is a Senior Consultant and Health and Group Benefits lead in Towers Watson’s Vancouver office, with more than 14 years of experience in group benefits from both a consulting and insurer perspective. He has extensive experience in all aspects of benefit plan management activities, such as renewal analysis and insurer negotiations, plan design benchmarking and vendor marketing. Alva is also familiar with multi-employer and association plan marketing and administration and Employee Assistance Program consulting. Alva has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of British Columbia and also holds a Group Benefits Associate (GBA) designation. Justin Kreller is a Senior Analyst, Health and Group Benefits, Towers Watson, with more than five years' experience as a health and group benefits advisor. He is experienced in implementing and designing new group benefit plans for employees in a mid-market setting and is also an experienced wealth and estate plan advisor, using planning tools such as life, STD/LTD and critical illness insurance to help preserve clients' estates.
