Position Objective

Benchmark is seeking an experienced consulting actuary with expertise in the operation of Health and Welfare Trusts (“HWT’s), Employee Life and Health Trusts (“ELHT’s”), and other benefit plans. The successful candidate’s primary focus will be leading and growing our benefits consulting business. This position reports to the Senior Consultant in Edmonton, though we will consider candidates working in other locations across Canada.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary consultant and actuary on our ELHT accounts, regularly attending client meetings to provide consulting advice and assistance to trustees in the operation of their plans.
  • Interact and liaise with regulators and other service providers (e.g. administrators, auditors, legal counsel, insurers/underwriters, custodians, and investment managers).
  • Prepare actuarial valuations including setting assumptions and discussing results with trustees.
  • Determine plan funding requirements, including insurance premiums, cash flow projections, and reserve and contingency allocations.
  • Review and analyze claims, enrolment data, trends, and other expenses.
  • Negotiate with insurers on terms and conditions of coverage.
  • Present financial experience and renewal reports for both insured and self-funded coverages.
  • Develop and expand the company’s benefits consulting business in Canada.
  • Draft and maintain plan documentation and communications (e.g. trust agreements, plan texts, amendments, resolutions, benefit booklets, insurance policies, participation agreements, forms and statements, announcements, etc.).
  • Interpret complex plan provisions and respond to enquiries regarding same.
  • Design and update plan coverage and operating rules and determine the cost and impact of coverage changes contemplated by clients.
  • Review interim and audited financial statements to assess ongoing funding and cash flow.
  • Keep clients apprised of legislative and regulatory changes, industry trends, and governance matters.
  • Prepare and distribute requests for proposals for the replacement of client service providers, analyze and summarize submissions, and assist in service provider transitions.
  • Serve as a mentor to train junior team members and provide technical expertise.
  • Support the Senior Consultant and Director, Actuarial Division with special projects, as required.



Application Requirements

  • FSA and FCIA designations, and a minimum of three years of experience with HWT’s and/or ELHT’s.
  • Insurance license a plus.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills in developing solutions to complex client issues.
  • Experience with multi-employer plans preferred.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (advanced Excel, in particular) and enterprise content management software.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal, and presentation).
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • An ability to work both independently and in team environments.
  • An ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet client deadlines.
  • Fluency in French is highly desirable.
