Job Summary

The Benefits Advisor is responsible for managing and administering plans and programs for CN’s Benefits Team portfolio. The Benefits Advisor will be involved on financial aspects, design, governance, communication, management of external providers, coordination with unions and other functions.

Main Responsibilities
 Group Benefits Plans (Canada) 

  • Collaborate with external vendors to manage administration of the Canadian-benefit plans and annual enrollment
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) and support various CN stakeholders on benefits-related issues (Labour Relations (LR) and Human Resources (HR), Accounting, and Finance)
  • Support Benefit Manager on ongoing review of policies, programs, processes, and monitoring of market best-practices
  • Develop communications pertaining to Canadian benefits

Group Benefits Plans – Canada (Financial and Legal Aspects) 

  • Perform analyses and projections for budgeting and funding of Administrative Services Only (ASO) accounts
  • Evaluate cost impact of potential changes to support recommendations in union negotiations
  • Review and update contracts based on latest agreements or provisions, and collaborate with Legal and Supply Management teams for contract renewals and implementations
  • Support Benefits Manager in negotiations and renewal of annual group insurance with multiple insurers
  • Monitor and assess impact of legislative changes across all provinces and at the federal level

Special Projects 

  • Perform analyses and prepare business cases and recommendations for special adhoc projects such as a Request For Proposals (RFPs), potential acquisitions, and new services
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) within CN in support of other functions

Employee Family Assistance Program (EFAP) Canada and US 

  • Design, develop, and communicate policies and programs offered through EFAP
  • Prepare material and coordinate meetings for the EFAP Senior Advisory Committee (SAC)
  • Participate in recruitment and training of EFAP peers
  • Ensure ongoing communication and training of peers
  • Manage ongoing training of stakeholders in the Critical Incident Response Process (CIRP)
  • Manage EFAP provider, monitor quality of service provided, follow up on issues raised, and ensure appropriate adjustments are made when necessary

Disability Management Canada 

  • Collaborate with insurer and administrator to ensure proper application of processes
  • Monitor and make recommendations to improve internal processes
  • Participate in management and coordination of Union Long Term Disability (LTD) Committee and Benefit Advisory Committee

Requirements:

Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines and handle pressure.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of benefits experience
  • Experience in a corporate environment*

*Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset

Education/Certification/Designation

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Actuarial Science or Administration

  • Basic knowledge of Systems, Applications and Products (SAP)*
