Job Summary

Under the direction of the Manager, Product Development, and as an active member of the Product and Innovation team, the Product Portfolio Specialist researches, analyzes, recommends and drives both current and future product lines with the potential to impact product delivery channels and required human or other resources.  Displays the technical acumen to manage member focused products both internally and externally and is the subject matter expert on identified product lines.  Contributes to the product vision, requirements and market strategy, and champions the needs of our members and partners.  

Job Duties

Product Management and Market Insights    

Gathers the necessary business intelligence for the product review process including consulting with members of PBC’s management, leadership and executive teams to develop awareness of medium and long term business strategies affecting product delivery channels such as existing product mix, member expectations, current and projected complement of  PBC’s sales force and future plans impacting organizational structure.
Builds ongoing awareness of the competitive landscape, and the impact on product positioning, marketing, promotional efforts, deployment of current and future human resources, the acquisition of new businesses or realignment and streamlining of existing departments with the potential to affect delivery channels.
Conducts desk research and analysis to determine product gaps and develops recommendations on all product options, taking into consideration availability of qualified resources or resource challenges impacting successful delivery following implementation.  Coordinates with Marketing when marketing research is required.
Provides subject matter expertise for all products to support the execution of product sales. Manages end-to-end product performance throughout the product lifecycle for product lines within the mandate, evaluates barriers to success, develops solutions including those with the potential to impact staff resources, job design and re-deployment of sales expertise within PBC’s work force. 
Contributes to benefit changes including health and dental, drug management, health and wellness, and travel; will provide changes to ongoing plan design when required.
Ensures product documentation, service agreements, training tools and promotional materials are up-to-date when product changes are required for those product lines in the mandate.
Identifies opportunities for new products and/or product enhancements that create new member value, generate new revenue and introduce efficiencies through innovative product design resulting in cost containment such as reducing the need for sales force interaction or administrative processes.  In consultation with the Manager, prepares and presents business cases to leadership and executive team members and supports leadership decision making. 
Brings innovative ideas to new products for insurance and non-insurance.
Maintains up to date knowledge and awareness of business intelligence and industry trends in insurance and non-insurance products and services potentially affecting PBC’s long term competitive edge and resource allocation.   

Partnership Management

Builds and manages product/service/member experience partnerships that deliver value, including existing contract building, and ongoing contract management for product vendors.  Influences the selection of external vendors and related resources through vendor evaluation, in consultation with Purchasing.
Facilitates communication between internal and external stakeholders to support the project needs.
 

Product and Innovation Team Interaction

As an active member of the Product Development Team, participates in team discussions throughout all stages of project planning and execution for new and enhanced products including research, design, development, implementation and evaluation stages.  Ensures sensitive information affecting existing PBC resources as a result of new product implementation or contract management is communicated to team members.
 

Required Qualifications

·        Minimum 3 years of working experience in sales or marketing, including responsibility for operational service levels and revenue accountability

·        Experience working in the insurance or health care industry, with a strong preference to relevant product innovation experience

·        Professional presence and demeanour in both communication and presentation skills.  Able to interact comfortably, and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization

·        Bachelor degree with a major in Business, Marketing, Economics or equivalent

Required Skills

·        Accountability and Initiative: Improve team performance and capabilities at the pace needed to meet all key performance indicators, shape and maintain the ongoing culture of member-first, customer centric innovation

Strong business acumen and ability to write comprehensive business cases
Ability to display data visually, creating powerful presentations which effectively demonstrate the value of  deliverables
Ability to effectively plan, prioritize and follow through in a timely manner and anticipate potential roadblocks
Strong verbal/written communication and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate with both technical and business teams
