Message from the Chairperson

2020 marks my 10th year of attending CPBI events. When I first joined the pension and benefits industry in the fall of 2009, I had never heard of the Canadian Pension and Benefits Institute. I had been working in financial services for 20 years so it surprised me that I had not heard of “CPBI”. Looking back on the 10 years of attending events and eight years of being on the regional council, I wish I would have attended these events 20 years sooner! It would have been financially advantageous for my clients in the private sector and myself as an employee to have been educated in pension and benefits from the beginning of my career! This organization allowed me the opportunity to increase my knowledge and confidence in pensions and benefits and because of that I understand now the HUGE advantage it is to have employer sponsored benefits.

It also allowed me to provide excellent financial planning education to members of pension and benefits, whether they were clients or family and friends!! My time spent on council, working with local professionals as well as meeting professionals nationally at conferences and meetings, is a huge reason why I love my job so much. I want to say “thank you” to CPBI for the education, knowledge, and appreciation I have developed while attending sessions and being a part of this great organization.

Our team of professionals in Saskatchewan are working on making our sessions into virtual opportunities to network. We are assembling another great line up of educational speakers for this program year! Please consider joining CPBI as a member to participate in these sessions at a reduced cost. The pandemic has made me a little more thankful for the opportunities that networking provides because I miss it so much! I am looking forward to when this is all behind us and we can get back to physical networking versus virtual networking. I hope you are all having “Aha!” moments that will impact you for the rest of your life! I am so thankful for the life we live in Canada and the opportunities we have here!

Regional Volunteer of the Year: Troy Milnthorp

Every year, the CPBI Saskatchewan Region recognizes one of its many volunteers who have contributed their time and talents towards CPBI’s goal: to provide quality education for our our members and guests in pensions, benefits, investments, and human resources. At its April 2020 virtual Annual General Meeting, CPBI Saskatchewan announced Troy Milnthorp as its 2020 Volunteer of the Year.

Troy has done a great deal of speaking for CPBI on a volunteer basis over the years, and he is a "fan favourite". In addition, this year he has put a lot of time and effort into his outstanding "What's Up Pension Stuff?" articles as our volunteer pension content creator. He is a long-term CPBI member and former CPBI Saskatchewan Council member. Troy is amiable and warmhearted; he has a great sense of humour and is an expert in his field. His many meaningful contributions to the CPBI Saskatchewan region make him highly deserving of this award. Please join us as we extend our heartfelt appreciation to Troy. Troy Milnthorp is the Senior Managing Director of Corporate Fund Services at the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) where he oversees their pension, benefits, and investment programs. Prior to joining the STF, he was a partner in the retirement practice at Aon Hewitt, where he provided pension and actuarial consulting services to clients locally and across the country. Troy is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.

Highlights of Happy Hour Member Appreciation with Bruce Sellery

At our Happy Hour Member Appreciation Webinar on September 17, 2020, Bruce Sellery kept our attention and focus with his energetic presentation. He was very entertaining and engaging, and he made managing money look fun!

Here are three key take-aways from his presentation:

1. “We are all in the same storm, but we are not all in the same boat.” The pandemic has affected people in different ways, for different reasons. It is critical to understand what you need, in your life, in this moment, to get a better handle on your money.

2. The Priority Pyramid is a way to figure out where to put your focus. It starts with positive cash flow, then moves up to debt elimination, then saving for the things that are important to you.

3. Taking action on your money takes discipline, patience, creativity, and courage.
