CP sponsors one of Canada’s oldest and largest private sector pension plans. Established in 1903, CP’s main Canadian defined benefit plan has over $12 billion of assets. CP also has several other defined benefit and defined contribution pension and non-pension post-employment benefit plans in Canada and the United States.

We are seeking an experienced pension actuary to join our internal team of pension plan management professionals. We are a small team playing a big role in all aspects of pension plan management, with a range of ongoing responsibilities, as well as analysis of emerging issues and finding solutions for new challenges and opportunities.

You will play a key role in expanding our internal capabilities, and will help shape the direction of the team’s priorities and objectives. In this role, you will apply your experience, your technical skills, and your ability to think strategically to a wide range of pension management functions.

The team has ongoing priorities that include:

  • Keeping senior management current on the pension plan’s status, and potential risks and opportunities;
  • Monitoring developments in pension legislation, actuarial standards or pension accounting rules, and assessing potential risks and opportunities for CP;
  • Exploring innovative approaches to benefit design, benefit security, and risk management;
  • Assessing plan governance practices, roles and responsibilities;
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements;
  • Financial reporting of pensions and other benefits in CP’s financial statements;
  • Supporting CP’s Pension Services department with pension administration functions, including special benefit calculations, setting specifications and testing changes to the pension administration system, and assisting with design and testing of plan member communications; and
  • Maintaining plan documentation, including drafting plan amendments for regulatory changes or changes in plan benefit provisions.

Over the coming 12-24 months we will have an added focus on developing tools and processes for:

  • Pension plan actuarial valuations for funding and for corporate financial reporting purposes, including data preparation and validation, setting assumptions and methods, calculating liabilities and related measures, and preparing reports and presentation materials;
  • Deterministic multi-year projections of plan funded status, contribution requirements, accounting costs, etc., including tools to monitor changing market conditions and other factors and their potential impact on the projections; and
  • Stochastic multi-year asset/liability modeling to support strategic pension risk management and asset allocation decisions.
Requirements:

Our ideal candidate has the following qualifications:

  • a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries;
  • a minimum of five years of experience in a pension consulting environment;
  • both solid technical actuarial skills and an ability to understanding how pension issues can affect the business;
  • experience in finding solutions to a diverse range of pension issues;
  • experience in a project management or leadership role;
  • able to envision a better way of doing things, build support for the vision, and be the agent of change to make it happen; and
  • ability to communicate effectively with various audiences  and settings, such as informal discussions, structured presentations and in writing.
