Cape Breton University (CBU) invites applications for the full-time position of Director of Human Resources.

The Director, as a member of the senior management team, will lead CBU in its efforts to achieve excellence and innovation in the delivery of human resource services for the University. Key departmental responsibilities include human resource planning and strategy development, employee and faculty relations, policy development and implementation, training and performance management, support for recruitment and retention initiatives, salary, benefit and pension administration, payroll services, compliance reporting, and occupational health and safety.

The Director leads a small team of professionals who support CBU in all aspects of human resources management. The Director will maintain key external relationships with university colleagues, advisors, and other human resources professionals in order to maintain CBU’s currency in responding to developing human resource practices and trends.

  • Appropriate degree, preferably with an HR or Business focus.
  • Ten (10) years’ experience in increasingly responsible positions in Human Resources field in a unionized environment. Experience in collective agreement administration and in negotiation of collective agreements. Experience working in a university is an asset.
  • Demonstrated understanding of legislation, regulations, and jurisprudence relevant to HR functions.
  • Must be knowledgeable of investigative techniques, i.e. appropriate method of dealing with complaints, accusations, and grievances.
