When selecting an investment manager, what should investors look for beyond historical returns? Is it possible to separate skill from historical performance? What is “real” alpha and where can we find it?

Join Gary Grad, CFA, Managing Director, Investment Management Research at CIBC Asset Management as he discusses the techniques and tools that his team utilizes when they research managers for the different client solutions offered by CIBC. Gary and his team meet with more than 350 managers a year globally, and perform fundamental and bottom-up diligence on each manager. Gary will share his insights on:

  • What is “real” alpha and how to find it
  • How to differentiate between skill and the 4 “P”s (People, Philosophy, Process and Performance)
  • The number one mistake he sees his clients make when assessing their managers
  • The best practices that he and his team have developed, and his belief that these factors are predictive of future outperformance.

The presentation will be followed by a question and answer period with a panel of local plan sponsors and experts.
