In this session, Lori Casselman will share results from studies that Sun Life Wellness Institute have partnered and initiated, including the study by the Richard Ivey School of Business and University of Western Ontario on the return on investment of workplace wellness programs for Canadian employers; the annual Buffett National Wellness Survey, which investigates the prevalence of worksite wellness in Canada; and, the annual Sun Life Canadian Health Index. Lori will also share best practices based on client cases that will collectively bring much needed new Canadian insights and evidence on the return on workplace wellness programs.

Session 6 - Pension
Are you interested in taking part in your employees’ retirement?

Most employers would probably be tempted to answer “no” (ex: potential for legal and fiduciary liability, not aligned with HR strategy, etc.). But whatever your response, it doesn’t mean that a properly structured group payout option shouldn’t be part of your overall retirement benefits strategy. A solution designed around the employers concerns and the service provider’s capabilities can make a winning partnership.

Chantal Racicot

Chantal Racicot is an advisor on the Conceptualization team for the Product Development and Management at Standard Life. Her role is to lead the development and implementation of various solutions such as financial products and services, retirement planning tools and communication material.
Prior to joining Standard Life she worked for a consulting actuary firm and a major insurance company in Australia. She has over 20 years of experience in defined benefit and defined contribution retirement plans.
Ms. Racicot earned a bachelor's degree in actuarial sciences from Laval University including studies at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. She is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.

Session 7 - Investment
Risk Based Allocation
Michel Malo, Universiy of Toronto Asset Management Corporation

Many recent academic research papers have turned up an interesting conclusion; basically, that risk does not pay. This presentation will provide an overview of many of the strategies discussed and how they can be incorporated within a Canadian Pension plan structure. More specifically we will look into the most common approaches like risk parity, minimum variance and maximum diversification. Can they be used inside equity asset classes to improve the risk-return characteristics ? What impact to they have on tracking error? What type of products are available?

 Michel Malo

Michel Malo joined UTAM in October 2009. His responsibilities include investment strategy for private markets and he is also Co-CIO of UTAM.
Michel has extensive investment management experience with leading financial organizations in Canada. Throughout his twenty five year career he has been involved with all facets of the investment management business both from the plan sponsor and the investment manager perspective. He has actively participated in the establishment of two leading Canadian asset managers. Prior to joining UTAM, he served as Executive Vice President in charge of Portfolio Optimization, Hedge Funds and also Commodities with La Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec.
