Senior Pension & Benefits Specialist

Reporting to the Manager, Payroll & Pension, the Senior Pension & Benefits Specialist will be responsible for the maintenance of SAIT’s pension, savings, and benefits plans.  You will develop, implement, communicate, and administer these plans for SAIT.  You will also be responsible for ongoing delivery of new employee compensation programs.  This position advises on and interprets policy, and works closely with the payroll and human resources teams to collaboratively resolve any issues that arise. In this role you will be accountable for program planning and the ongoing evaluation of systems and practices.

NOTE: This is a full-time temporary salaried maternity leave coverage position ending on/or around June 30, 2020.


  • Provide leadership and oversight for the pension services function for the institution which includes overall governance, compliance and administration related to pension and savings plans
  • Lead research, design, implementation, delivery and ongoing maintenance of pension and savings programs as well as recommend plan changes for consideration
  • Prepare and delivery ongoing communications to plan members and employee groups of current plan information and any changes
  • Maintain and report accurate records on pension trends and statistics
  • Lead SAIT’s Pension Committee meetings which includes preparing briefing papers, agendas and motions with supporting documentation.
  • Audit all pension documentation to ensure accuracy and adherence to policy and procedure.
  • Manage SAIT’s adherence to and reporting requirement related to the Transparent Act
  • Manage pension design and/or system projects and provide technical expertise, advice and analysis to SAIT’s pension program structure and plans
  • Produce materials for Employee Services and the Board of Governors
  • Oversee pension regulatory and administration processes

  • University degree in Finance, Commerce, Statistics or related area of study
  • 5-10 years of pension, benefits and compensation research experience
  • Excellent knowledge of Provincial and Federal Legislation, benefits and pension acts and Freedom of information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP)
  • Experience with the Local Authorities Pension Plan will be considered an asset
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel required (vlook ups, macros, etc)
  • Designation(or working toward) in Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) or Pension Plan Administration Certification (PPAC) or equivalent (Actuarial, Finance, Accounting) is required
  • Possess excellent planning and project management skills, research skills, including knowledge of research methodologies and statistical techniques
  • Strong analytical skills, ability to interpret information objectively, analyze errors, develop recommendations and resolve problems
  • Possess a high attention to detail, able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills
  • Proactive approach, flexible and positive attitude
  • Ability to work well within a team and in a larger inter-disciplinary organization
  • Experience working and presenting at Executive level
  • UAT Testing experience
  • Knowledge of Executive Pension Plans (SERP)
