JOB SUMMARY

The Communications & Engagement Specialist (CES) is responsible for developing, implementing and managing comprehensive, integrated communication and engagement strategies, campaigns, plans and tactics using a variety of digital, face-to-face, and print media to enhance awareness, engagement and understanding of the University's wellbeing and benefits programs and priorities.

This position oversees communications for University-wide internal audiences, which includes faculty, staff, post-docs, and the broader campus community, as well as external audiences such as retirees and prospective faculty and staff. Collaborating with leaders and colleagues across the institution, the role leads the development of communication strategies that demonstrate the value and importance of benefits, wellbeing, and relocation offerings as part of the employment promise. 

Requirements:

ACCOUNTABILITIES INCLUDE:

Leads the development of annual and long-term integrated communication and engagement strategies for HWB that align with HR and University strategies and guidelines to influence behaviour toward action (e.g. wellbeing, healthy behaviours, practicing benefit consumerism) and that reinforce the University's commitments to supporting health and wellbeing.

Oversees the project management of multiple, overlapping communication and engagement campaigns, plans and tactics related to benefits and wellbeing, including scheduling, budgeting, resourcing and logistics to ensure deadlines are met.

Leads the strategic design, maintenance, content development and delivery of a variety of print and digital communication vehicles (including website, e-newsletters, and social channels) that contribute directly to the faculty and staff experience at UBC and influence faculty, staff and post-doc engagement, retention and recruitment.

Manages communication-related vendor sourcing including drafting Request for Proposal documents and/or communication briefs for external service providers (e.g., web developers, graphic designers, copywriters); evaluates and recommends applicants.

Manages professional relationships with internal communication partners and external suppliers.

Develops reports, proposals, and presentations related to benefits and wellbeing, incorporating relevant narrative, dashboards and analytics, for multiple audiences and stakeholders, including UBC's Board of Governors and executive team.

Contributes to HR and university-wide communication planning, design and implementation, both as part of an integrated HR communications and engagement team and an integrated University wellbeing team. Includes developing communications strategies and plans and supporting implementation at the faculty and administrative unit level as part of faculty/unit-led wellbeing strategic planning as well as across the organization in support of UBC Wellbeing.

Develops and monitors communications metrics, measurement and feedback to ensure communication objectives are achieved. Makes recommendations for improvements.

Advises and coaches colleagues on best practices and related communications and employee engagement methods.

Leads or participates as a member of University committees, task forces, and other related initiatives as required.

Remains current with developments and best practices in the fields of communications, engagement and digital media, and participates in relevant internal and external networks.

Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Preferably degree in Communications, Digital Media, or Journalism. Minimum of six years’ experience or communications services or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in oriented communications and engagement (preferably in a benefits and wellbeing environment). Knowledge of methods, practices and techniques relating to internal and external communications and desktop publishing, web front-end design patterns, social media, user interface and information technology. Ability to provide technical advice and guidance regarding the methods and material used in communication strategies to support departmental goals and objectives and to address staff information needs. Ability to effectively research, write, edit, produce and coordinate the implementation of a variety of communication vehicles. Demonstrated experience in managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines and budgets, and resolving unexpected and/or ambiguous situations and issues. Advanced written and oral communications skills and ability to adapt style to a variety of audiences. Ability to exercise initiative, resourcefulness, and sound judgment. Effective at working independently as well as part of a collaborative team. Proven interpersonal and facilitation skills. Commitment to personal learning, development and improvement in pursuit of own objectives as well as those of the team and the organization.
