The Opportunity:

The Employee Benefits team, in collaboration with health system partners, is embarking on a 3-year strategic plan to re-design the disability claims management model to provide improved service and support to claimants on their path to health. We're seeking an innovative leader with experience in disability claims management and benefit services. Reporting to the Director, Employee Benefits, the Claims Services Manager is responsible for the delivery of world-class customer service to over 80 health care employers and 40,000 plan members. The Manager works closely with employers, unions, regulating authorities, actuaries, legal, and external consultants to ensure effective operation of four self-insured disability income plan trusts.

The Claims Services Manager will develop disability case management best practice; ensure consistent application in the daily work of the team; and respond to complex inquiries. They will lead the team through the implementation of the strategic plan and support the team through the change. In addition, the Manager will undertake research projects; provide education and seminars to plan administrators; and compile and analyze reports to monitor trends and experience of the Plans. The Manager will prepare briefing notes to inform stakeholders and to support the decision making of 3sHealth senior leadership, Board of Trustees, committees and stakeholders. The Manager will review files in preparation for medical and legal review and represent 3sHealth at legal proceedings.

Through setting and monitoring the service standards of the department, ensuring quality at every step of the way, the Manager works to remove barriers and ensure that customers receive efficient and timely communication throughout the disability claim process. In an environment committed to continuous improvement, the Manager will use Lean tools to increase communication, perform root cause analysis and improve the work we do for our customers.

Requirements:

What we’re looking for:

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years' progressively responsible disability claims management and benefit plan administration experience.
  • Minimum of five years' leadership experience, with demonstrated ability to engage and develop staff to deliver on results and service excellence.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education (degree/certificate) in Human Resource Management, vocational rehabilitation, nursing, disability management or attendance support.
  • Certification as an Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) is considered an asset.
  • Formal education/training in leadership an asset.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Ability to learn new methodologies and apply those concepts in Lean improvement initiatives.

  • Ability to remain calm and focused during peak periods of activity, deadlines and stress and ensure deadlines are met.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of direct reports, set performance expectations and ensure high quality deliverables.
  • Demonstrated superior skills in researching, writing and editing sensitive materials for content, clarity, accuracy and conciseness.
  • Possess initiative, self-direction, organizational and leadership abilities that support translating strategic direction into operational plans.
  • Working knowledge of general human resource, organizational development and financial management principles.
  • Knowledge of lean processes would be considered an asset.
