This session will discuss the risks associated with low member engagement in DC plans and developments regarding DC plan default funds. Litigation and regulatory developments in the US and UK will be discussed in order to avoid similar issues here in Canada. The session will also discuss the risks associated with delayed retirements within a workforce and their effect on dynamics, productivity, benefit costs, and the public relations issues that can also be associated with a workforce that is not prepared for retirement. 


 

Oma Sharma 
Partner & DC Consulting Leader, Mercer Toronto

Oma Sharma is a Partner in Mercer's Toronto office. She is the Defined Contribution (DC) Consulting Leader for Canada, responsible for the strategic direction of Mercer’s Canadian DC consulting offering. She also sits on Mercer’s Global DC Leadership Group, North American Investment Business Leadership Group and Canadian Retirement Business Leadership Group.

Oma has over 25 years of experience in the retirement and investment fields. Oma consults to her clients on all aspects of the DC value chain. She has extensive experience in designing and benchmarking DC plans, conducting investment manager and recordkeeper searches, and developing appropriate governance and investment structures for these plans. Oma has also assisted many clients in conducting periodic investment manager and recordkeeper performance reviews for these plans. 

Oma has been with Mercer since 1987. Prior to joining Mercer, she spent two years with a major insurance company where she was involved in the design and administration of defined benefit pension plans. 

Oma holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Finance (BComm) degree from the University of Toronto and is both a CFA Charterholder and a Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI).
