JOB SUMMARY: Human Resources is committed to a vision where employees are engaged, supported, and inspired to achieve excellence at Dalhousie University. A unit within HR, Pensions and Employee Benefits is primarily responsible for employee benefits and pension plan administration, claims assistance, benefit documentation and counselling, and tuition fee waiver program administration. The Benefits Advisor engages stakeholders and partners throughout the university and amongst external agencies in furthering and improving the Dalhousie Insured Benefits Program. This position will work as part of a strong team environment in Pensions and Employee Benefits (P&EB), and foster a better understanding of what P&EB, and HR, does to contribute to making Dalhousie an employer of choice. Specific responsibilities include:

• Provide leadership in benefits administration at Dalhousie University;
• Manage the operation of the Insured Benefits Programs in accordance with the multiple contracts that are in place;
• Continually evaluate and make recommendations to improve benefit packages within the financial limits of the University and the members;
• Coordinate the flow of information and processes required to support plan members and the University;
• Liaise with the Employee Benefits Committee on all insured benefits matters;
• Liaise with the Disability Case Manager in Long Term Disability cases and maintain records for these claimants;
• Liaise and coordinate with insurance carriers and benefits consultants to resolve problems on behalf of benefit participants;
• Assist the Pension unit in educating plan members regarding employee and retiree benefits entitlements.

As Human Resources is committed to a comprehensive, integrated and efficient service delivery, members of the HR team are responsible to ensure that all programs and services reinforce the policies and strategies of the department, provide clients with a base level understanding of HR functions and assistance accessing them, and work closely with departmental specialists to provide a coordinated response. This position reports to the Director, Pensions and Employee Benefits.
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: Ideal candidate will have a university degree with five to seven years related benefits administration experience. Strong preference will be given to candidates with a CEBS designation (or those who are working toward a CEBS designation). Demonstrated judgement in the interpretation and application of insured benefit contracts is vital. Attention to detail and accuracy is expected. Must have the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts. Strong communication and listening skills are essential to this position.

*This position has a provisional classification. The Job Evaluation Unit will initiate a formal classification review in approximately six months.

Salary Range: $50,788 - $68,714 per annum (effective July 1, 2010)
